Retain offers two methods of indexing: background and real-time. Both methods capture and index 100 percent of messaging data, but provide the administrator with a choice depending on bandwidth and work load requirements.

Both the Retain server and worker agents run on a variety of platforms such as Linux, Windows and NetWare. Retain also supports the most popular database formats (Oracle, MySQL, MS SQL and XML) and storage platforms such as Centera and NetApp Snaplock. Retain also facilitates the storage of messaging data in a document management system such as Open Text LiveLink to eliminate silos of corporate data.

New to Retain is more granular control over the date, content and frequency of deleted information. An end user ACL (Access Control List) allows submission of a list of proposed deletions, plus the ability to perform a dry run before actually purging data. This way, administrators can double check information to be deleted and better enforce organizational policies. In addition, administrators can opt to include or exclude users and their various mailboxes from an archive indexing job.
